The fact that you “have” a physical body does not mean that you are a “stand-alone” being. On a purely physical level, your body requires water, air and food from external sources. Such nourishment enables the body’s organs and systems to function in ways that generate physical energies to “do” what the body is made to do. That’s how the body-mechanism works, but there’s far more to the body than “mechanics”.

The body is also an actual “mind”. A few examples of the body-mind can be found in “learned” body-movements such as riding a bicycle, skiing, typing, dancing or playing specific sports. Once learned, an unpracticed skill may be called “rusty”; but then, with a small effort, your abilities can be easily revived years later.

On an altogether different and more fascinating level, the “mind of the body” is, itself, an always-interconnected-expression-of-God, as is the body, as-a-whole, and all its other “minds”).

One of Jesus’ most important teaching “methods” was directed to THE BODY. In one sense, the first two methods provide a primer for this third method. Jesus’ 3rd Method might be compared to learning about chemistry. Textbook and classroom lessons provide important information, but it’s the “laboratory” practice that lets you “experience” what you were taught.

“The Jesus’ Method” Method #2
Freedom 8 — New-Life Series

Thoughtful people make the effort to act responsibly and kindly; but, two things often complicate their intentions: 1) other people can make things difficult; and, 2) our own feelings can make this difficult.

Jesus thoroughly understood people. He wanted to show them a path to personal and spiritual freedom. So, to this end, he used stories. Stories paint pictures that appeal to a person’s “feeling nature”.

The second of Jesus’ “Methods” speaks to “the mind of the heart”. Because the language of the heart is “imagery”, Jesus told stories about ordinary people and circumstances to which anyone could relate. Examples include discovering a treasure buried in a field, a father and his wayward son, the inability of pigs to appreciate the value of pearls, or, a poor widow’s seemingly tiny gift.

Each of Jesus’ 46 stories (parables) presents a major “spiritual lesson” designed to lift a person up. All we need is the “eyes to see, and ears to hear”.

Most “theological” schools teach religious doctrines belonging to particular sects. Catholic theology differs from Methodist theology, which differs from Evangelical theology. Every type of Christian “theology” reflects a differing interpretation of Biblical teachings, with its strongest emphasis on the New Testament.

The Bible provides accounts of many individuals whose understanding and actions often so-transcended ordinary human capabilities that they are seen as “miracle-makers”. Among all of these figures, more was written about Jesus than about any other.

Jesus is particularly important because we have four different written accounts of what he taught and what he did. This record enables us to see how he actually taught his students to “do the things that he did”.

I have labelled the way he taught as “The Jesus’ Method”.

Jesus was a spiritual pragmatist. His results prove that even the most ordinary person can become a “miracle-maker”.

The Art of Becoming ‘New’

When you wake up in the morning, do you usually feel excited about the day ahead? How often do you feel so good that you can’t wait to get going?

Have you noticed that most young children are never ready to “go to bed” and are raring to go, as soon as the sun comes up – and maybe sooner?

A child’s life is typically filled with “first-experiences,” meaning that almost every day holds something “new”. Children love adventure, learning, exploration and “newness”.

During the times in which Jesus lived, the Hebrew people were beset by “overlords,” which included their own tyrannical kings, a rigid rule-enforcing priesthood and a ruthless Roman government.

Jesus’ presence and teachings felt liberating for his listeners and followers. He gave people something that filled them with hope, excitement, joy and brightness.

Are you ready for some “brightness” in your daily life?

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.
